Pomegranate: history, facts and properties

Pomegranate is one of the oldest cultivated fruits in the world. For more than 4,000 years, this special fruit has been grown in the Middle East and around the Mediterranean. In many cultures, the pomegranate symbolizes abundance, fertility, happiness and vitality.

The fruit is easily recognizable by its firm red skin and the hundreds of ruby red seeds inside. Did you know that one pomegranate can contain as many as 600 to 1,000 seeds?

A few fun facts

🍎 The name pomegranate comes from the Latin pomum granatum, which literally means "apple with seeds".

🍎 In Greek mythology, the pomegranate played an important role as a symbol of life and rebirth.

🍎 The fruit grows on a shrub or small tree that can live for up to 200 years.

🍎 Pomegranates are eaten worldwide and processed into juices, teas, desserts and savory dishes.

Natural properties of pomegranate

Pomegranate has been valued for centuries because of the nutrients naturally found in the fruit.

For example, pomegranate naturally contains:

❤️ antioxidants, including polyphenols and anthocyanins

❤️ vitamin C

❤️ potassium

❤️ fiber (especially in the seeds)

❤️ various plant-based nutrients

Antioxidants help protect the body against free radicals, substances that arise during normal bodily processes and under the influence of external factors such as air pollution and sunlight.

Why do we combine pomegranate with ginger?

At Paulies Ginger, we were looking for an ingredient that would complement the powerful taste of organic ginger.

Pomegranate turned out to be a perfect match. Its fresh, slightly sweet taste provides a beautiful contrast to the spicy kick of ginger.

The combination of organic ginger, lemon, pomegranate and a hint of agave syrup creates a powerful, fruity and refreshing taste with the familiar Paulies kick. ❤️
